TikTok is a platform which has been around various controversies. However, there was a reason for its ban, allegations and other things. Of course, those might have some basis, but the motive was simple — TikTok was becoming too big.
Although in theory, there is infinite watch time attention possible from billions of people, in practice, it’s limited. If you and TikTok reach 100 million people, your time is divided. The time spent on TikTok is the same time not spent on YouTube or Instagram.
There was a barrage of complaints, mocking and other things which TikTok did; they were shamed, their creators were questioned, and there was a sense of mockery. If you were a YouTuber, then you were doing something good, but a TikToker is someone doing silly things and doesn’t deserve the fame and the money.
But what happened is that every other platform, like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, pivoted to have their own TikTok version because that’s what people want. Let’s call them TikTok clones.
Let’s thank TikTok because it democratised the content creation game.
Their platform made the content creation easy; anyone with a phone could make professional-looking videos. The second thing is that since it’s not search-based, everyone has the chance to get discovered and share their creativity. And slowly, it did, thousands of creators who couldn’t make it on other platforms made it big on TikTok.
However, TikTok failed in the monetisation aspect. No platform has cracked the money aspect as beautifully as YouTube. So you see a natural transition from TikTok to YouTube or other platforms. This is necessary for sustenance.
There have been many platforms, and some have stayed longer than others. But once in a while, a platform comes that gives everyone an opportunity to shine. Reddit was one such community, and then there is TikTok. Despite its hurdles, it rose to the top and still gets the attention of millions of people.
If you are a creative, you need to choose one platform and then go all in. However, the highest chance of success is on TikTok and its clone. You are most likely to get more views on YouTube shorts than on long-form videos.
So, where does it leave us? This is a lesson in history, in the content creation game. If, as a platform, you do something new for the creators, you will stay in the game longer, and others will rush to copy you.
This is also a tip to the platform for democratising content creation; history will remember you fondly because every platform eventually dies sooner or later. However, a platform like TikTok will be remembered because its clone, soul will remain.
The hope from upcoming or current platforms is to not only focus on making your billionaires, instead making all the content creators millionaries and you becoming multi-millionaires, that’s a more awesome story which will keep you longer in the game and get good blessings too.
Now go make some TikTok, YT shorts or Instagram shorts — whatever you want to call them.
