oh my lord. i just watched Aftersun and am now doing a deep dive reading every review and reddit thread i can find. this movie hit hard as someone who lost their dad to suicide at 21. i agree with everyone that the final scene was gut wrenching and this entire movie is so beautiful. i won’t go into the details of my own experience, but i now feel like i have a better understanding of some of the experiences i had with my own dad. what stuck with me was the final scene where Calum walks down the hall of the airport with the camera and into the double doors to the “rave”. i interpreted this as how Sophie sees her final moments with her dad, she was young and this was how her brain pieced together his final moments. him recording her at the airport was her final memory with him, and she was too young to fill in the gaps of what happened between then and him dying. im assuming the rave/party scenes were a recurring dream or intrusive thought of Sophie’s. being so young, you don’t know all the details, so that’s what her mind made up for her.
10/10 recommend, will never watch again. lol.
