Decoding Bias is an AI art experience where audiences can sit with eight AI agents discussing bias in AI systems, which reflects the prejudice and discrimination prevalent in mainstream society. The video clip included in the documentation is brief, lasting only three minutes, while the entire experience spans approximately 45 minutes.
The 3D avatars and environments are reminiscent of video games, and all the AIs have human faces and voices. We have entered an age where AI systems closely resemble humans, embodying the flaws of human culture, including prevalent biases.
Bias is indeed a significant cultural issue that must be addressed. But what is the right way to move beyond bias? How not to treat what’s considered “other” harshly and less empathetically?
The portrayal of AI in this discussion isn’t excessively technical, avoiding boring a contemporary art audience with the technical complexity of AI’s internal workings. The fluency in discussing AI bias also reflects the maturing conversation around bias in AI.
AI played several roles in this participatory artwork. Firstly, the topic centers on AI bias, particularly gender bias. One source reveals that “parts of the text come from an AI chatbot. The voices of the avatars were borrowed from real actors, and body movements and facial expressions were animated using motion capturing,” which means that an AI chatbot like ChatGPT generates some of the conversations. The voices used involve AI-generated clones of human actors’ voices.
Compared to other AI Art, it does not build a customized AI system for the artwork. It does not require customerized training data for an AI system. It’s more like a commentary on AI bias through eight avatars that speak like AI and represent AI systems.
One aspect that the creator behind the work took care of is including the audience in the experience, placing them alongside these eight AI agents, and providing them with a 360-degree audiovisual experience. The framing of the art experience as group therapy is brilliant, making it a unique experience rather than simply standing before eight TV screens and watching eight videos addressing AI bias.
