I have to give a shout-out to tynantalkstunes on TikTok for introducing me to the eclectic songwriting of Irish singer/songwriter Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, known professionally as CMAT. From the moment I listened to the title track of her most recent release, EURO-COUNTRY, I knew I was in for a treat.

Thompson’s conversational lyrical style is a hallmark of her releases since her debut. While her playful style and wit may bring a lightness to her lively country-flirting pop sound, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a depth to her work. EURO-COUNTRY spearheads many compounding issues like economic decline and its effects on society, personal stagnation, traditional women’s roles, and the frustration of losing someone you wish you had been closer to. It is her wry sense of humor that makes each topic feel so accessible.

Our adventure begins with the atmospheric prelude“Billy Byrne From Ballybrack, the Leader of the Pigeon Convoy.” A sonic bath of muffled conversation, airy breezes, crowd ambiance, and the hint of synth. It’s as if we’re breaking away from the chaos of the world around us to take refuge in the daydream that’s washed over us.
