Multi-instrumentalist Ichiko Aoba cut her teeth on the iconic music of Disney and Studio Ghibli. Using these magical pieces as inspiration, Aoba has crafted a sound that brings new life to whatever she sets her sights on.

A chance recommendation that put her most recent release, Luminescent Creatures, onto my radar. As I have begun to fall in love with ambient/atmospheric works, this record, which focuses on Hateruma Island of Okinawa, exceeded my expectations.

Ichiko expressed how she wanted to get back to the essence of communication and its simple beauty during her interview with The Creative Independent:

I titled the album Luminescent Creatures because I was thinking about when this planet was born and the first creatures born in the sea. The first way that they were able to message between each other was by lighting themselves. They knew how lonely they were. They wanted to share their existence.
