AMA: I’m Renee, the developer of Potions: A Curious Tale! You’ve probably seen me cry.

Hi r/gaming! I’m Renee Gittins, the developer of Potions: A Curious Tale, an adorable cozy adventure game! I’m a self-taught indie developer that started Potions many, many years ago. I ended all of the way up in executive management in the AAA side of the game industry while working on Potions in the evenings and on weekends. My career path is winding, taking me from biotech to software development to marketing to games journalism to leading the International Game Developers Association.

I’ve been listed on Forbes 30 Under 30 for Games, given dozens of talks about game development (from GDC to talking to the FTC about loot boxes), and created free resources for other game developers like GameDevFoundry

You most likely have seen me on short-form video platforms, though. My TikTok about the tribulations of being an indie developer with the EA shadowdrops immediately after Potions’ launch went ultra-viral (and, unfortunately, ultra toxic– though I’ve cleaned up the comments a decent amount), but most of my videos are comedy skits about being a game developer and just general game development advice videos. However, I do fear there will be a lot of marketing videos from me this week with Potions’ recent update and console launch!

Potions: A Curious Tale is a cozy adventure-crafting game where your wits are your greatest weapons and combat is not always the answer.

You play as a young witch named Luna, who has recently discovered her ability to brew magical potions. She uses these potions as spells to solve puzzles and gather rare ingredients from monsters on her quest to become a Potions Master.

Potions: A Curious Tale is now available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation 5!

And as a little thank-you to everyone who supported my Steam launch last year (and honestly helped me emotionally survive), I also created a free endgame update, The Temple of Spirit, which adds new puzzles, quests, and late-game challenges for all players on all platforms.

Now, for some preliminary answers:

The only developer?

No, not the only developer. I have worked with many amazing folks over the years who helped me with art, audio, and other aspects of the game. Many people have (wrongly) dubbed my game a solo project, but there’s almost no true solo developed games out there. We all rely on so many tools, assets, advice, and services! And, trust me, none of you want to see my attempts at art.

I think is it important to be generous with crediting, because I believe even a single asset’s contribution is worth recognition. The game development industry has a terrible reputation for not properly crediting developers and support staff on projects.

Still, this project is “my baby”, and I oversaw every aspect of development, handled the vast majority (95%+) of code, design, and implementation, and was responsible for all of the business and marketing, too. Unfortunately, not everyone has believed me, so here’s a bit of an angry video where I brought the receipts

Did you just cry for attention and marketing?

No. I was honestly, truly, deeply frustrated and upset to find all of my launch efforts blindsided. It was by far the second hardest day of my life, with the hardest day being the very next day when all of the harassment really took off.

It was a true, heartfelt rant about the challenges of being an indie developer. If I had intended to use it for marketing purposes, then I should have at least said the title of my game!

Thankfully, it all worked out in the end, but I’m pretty sure I lost a few years off of my life from the stress! It’s truly impossible to prepare for hundreds of people telling you to kill yourself or that they hope to harm/kill you personally.
