I'm finally moving to Windows 11 and I will have two SSDs. I'll be doing a fresh install and it will take me a long time to get everything set up just the way I like — programs, settings, etc. I'd love to protect myself against hardware failure, user error, malware, etc.

I'm not very up to speed on modern features in Windows, especially Windows 11. Can anybody offer guidance on the most robust option for me? Here are some ideas I have:

  • Set up RAID1 via BIOS. Downside: doesn't allow me to revert, dependent on hardware, requires special Windows drivers (?) (can't use Storage Spaces on my boot (C) drive)
  • Set up automatic checkpoints so that I can restore to a previous point if things go awry.
  • Windows Backup. I haven't used it but it always references "external drive". Can I have a permanent SSD (e.g. D:) that I back up to on a schedule?
  • Could I simply clone one SSD to the other SSD on a regular basis? If something happens, I could just physically swap the two SSDs?

Any other suggestions? Or should I do a mix of these?
