Let me be up front from the off by stating that I was unaware that this was a YA novel when I started, so my initial feelings on the books were clouded by that lack of knowledge. When I actually went to look and saw that it was YA, I was then able to better settle into the story.
The Heart Taker has everything you would want from the genre, such as high school drama, teenage angst, and a bubbling romance going on just below the surface. You don’t particularly expect there to be major character development, but the main man, Jack, was very well put together, thanks in large part to his family life, which became an integral part of the story.
As you might imagine for a YA novel, the violence and horror is muted somewhat, but there are still some very good elements that will keep readers of the intended age group on their toes. There is a good whodunnit going on through the story, too, and while I was able to, for the most part, figure it all out, younger readers will have a great time following all the breadcrumbs.
All told, this was a fast-paced, fun read that slots very nicely into the YA genre. I would definitely recommend giving The Heart Taker by A.M. Wiley a read if you are looking to dip your toe into horror via the YA reading pool.
