OpenAI has announced the launch of Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, powered by a new standard called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). This feature allows users to discover products and complete purchases directly inside the chat interface, representing a significant step toward what OpenAI calls agentic commerce.
What Is Instant Checkout?
When users search for products in ChatGPT, the assistant returns organic recommendations. If a product supports Instant Checkout, a Buy button will appear. Users can review details such as price, shipping, and payment before confirming the order — all without leaving ChatGPT.
Payments are processed using stored payment methods in the user’s OpenAI account, or they can select alternate options at checkout. Once an order is placed, the merchant handles everything else, including fulfillment, shipping, customer service, and returns.
OpenAI notes that merchants pay a small fee per completed transaction, but users pay no extra fees, and product ranking is not influenced by whether Instant Checkout is enabled.
