The Oriental Circlet (with matching earrings and necklace) was originally set with a collection of opals, one of Albert’s favourite gemstones. Later, believing that opals were unlucky, Queen Alexandra replaced them with Burmese rubies. The Indian-inspired design of lotus flowers and Mughal arches remain largely the same as when it was first created.
The tiara was frequently worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and was passed to Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
Today marks the first time the tiara has been seen in nearly two decades. Queen Elizabeth II wore the tiara only once during her reign, on a trip to Malta in 2005.
