Charli D’Amelio: TikTok’s Biggest Star, But Still Silent on Trans Issues

The Silence is Deafening

When I scroll through TikTok, it’s nearly impossible to miss Charli D’Amelio. With over 100 million followers, her influence is undeniable, her dance moves enchanting. As a trans Latina, my interactions with social media are fraught with the battles for visibility and respect. While D’Amelio dazzles viewers with her latest routines, a pressing question often tugs at my conscience: Where is her voice on trans rights?

We’ve seen Charli celebrate milestones, from her rise on TikTok to her debut at the Met Gala. Yet, in the clamor of her meteoric ascent, the silence on trans issues rings louder by the day. It’s Pride Month, a period steeped in the valor of LGBTQIA+ people fighting for dignity and equality. Yet, the reticence from some of TikTok’s most influential voices, including D’Amelio’s, speaks volumes about the selective advocacy dominating today’s social media landscapes.

As someone enmeshed in the fights for social justice, I’ve seen firsthand the damage and disenfranchisement caused by influential figures who choose silence. This isn’t merely about one person’s choice to speak up or stay silent; it’s about the systemic oppression that flourishes when those with a platform opt to overlook marginalized communities.
