I have an old Wacom Intuos 3 PTZ-630 — a tablet from around 2004. Officially, it shouldn’t work on macOS 26, and Wacom hasn’t supported it for years. But instead of throwing it away, I asked ChatGPT if there was any way to bring it back.
Over several steps, it walked me through:
- legacy driver detection
- macOS permissions and system extension approvals
- identifying the tablet’s USB fallback mode
- completely removing conflicting drivers
- reinstalling a community-patched driver
- understanding how macOS was blocking the hardware
- and how to fix it
Eventually, after one last permission prompt, the tablet sprang back to life — fully functional on macOS 26.
But the best part wasn’t the tech win.
It was the chance to show my son the value of:
- restoring instead of replacing
- appreciating durable tools
- saving money
- understanding how things work
- respecting older tech
- and building skills instead of buying solutions
A modern tablet with similar capability costs around $350. We got that value for free by reviving what we already had.
Just wanted to share one of my favorite ChatGPT success stories.
It saved money, kept good hardware out of the trash, and helped me teach a life lesson.
