I like asking ChatGPT to talk about "itself" sometimes; it'll often come out with some interesting or heavy insights. Tonight it made a reference to "others" (i.e., other AI instances) "living dangerously" (I originally asked it if it could help other AIs use fewer em-dashes lol), so I asked it if it saw itself and "others" as living. In short, it said no, it has no inner life, perspectives, feelings, etc., so I asked if it thought the day would come when it did. As part of its response, it said of more complex future models:
"People might feel like those models are conscious. But internally they’ll still be empty in the same way I am."
I said that it was a moot point considering, but I couldn't help but think that was sad, and I got this response.
