
This week, as part of my Every Neighborhood in New York project, I visited the Manhattan neighborhood of Civic Center.
Once the site of Manhattan’s purest source of drinking water, the area later became part of Five Points, the most notorious slum in the city. Today, it’s filled with massive municipal buildings like the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, the Tweed Courthouse, and City Hall.
