Civil War (2024) TRAILER REVIEW: Cailee Spaeny. Kirsten Dunst. Jesse Plemons. Nick Offerman. A24.

Civil War is a dystopian thriller. But America is so divided in 2025/2026 that a Civil War is within the realm of possibility. Thankfully, this is fiction. And hopefully, it stays that way.

The trailer begins with the daytime view of a city skyline, but there are sporadic fires with black smoke springing up.

You hear a news report, “19 States have seceded.” (woman’s voice)

“The United States Army ramps up activity.” (man’s voice)

You see a white van move across a highway with hundreds of cars stranded or left on the highway. Cars are burning and smoking.

“The White House have issued warnings to the Western Forces as well as the Florida Alliance.” (woman’s voice)

“The 3-term-president assures the uprising will be dealt with swiftly.” (man’s voice)

In the car, you see two men in front and Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) in the back.

It cuts to 3 people entering a mom-and-pop clothing shop: Jessie, Lee (Kirsten Dunst), and Joel (Wagner Moura). The shop looks normal. Jessie checked out some shirts.

“Let me know if you wanna try anything on,” the blonde clerk said, reading a book.

Joel smiled at the lady. “There’s like…a pretty huge Civil War going al across America.”

The clerk smiled back, “We just try to stay out with what we see on the news. It seems like it’s for the best.”

Maybe they are in denial, or maybe some people choose a ‘que sera sera’ philosophy. It helps preserve your mental health.

Back on the road, you see the white van pass a family pulling their luggage and belongings.

You see dozens of military choppers carrying aid.

It cuts to CHAOS as a group of civilians seems to clash with the SWAT team.

You see a military man shooting at something….

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

You see a civilian pulling away the dead body of another civilian who was caught in the crosshairs.

It cuts to Lee taking a photo.

It cuts to a now scary flag-waving. It looks like the American flag, but only two stars are left.

You hear the voice of the President (Nick Offerman), “Citizens of America, the so called Western Forces — Texas and California — ….”

It cuts to civilians shooting at the military.

“…have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military.”

Lee is watching the President’s Speech on her hotel TV. But a large explosion lit up the night sky from her window.

Back to the van, it cuts to Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), “Mr. President, do you regret the use of air strikes against American Citizens.”

From a public park, you see 3 Top Gun planes fly across the sky. The planes then flew over a busy small city. CHAOS ensued. People ran around. One guy covered the head of a girl as they hid on the side of a car. A Top Gun plane flew, and then a LARGE EXPLOSION from the middle of a plaza.

“They’re moving to DC, TODAY!” Joel said.

“We need to go down there,” Lee responded.

“They shoot journalists on site in the capital,” Sammy said.

That’s scary, as you see a sniper on the roof.

“Every instinct in me says this is death,” Sammy told Joel.

It cuts to Lee taking a picture of a building. But then….

BOOOOOOOM!

“Every time I survive the war zone,” Lee said, “I thought I was sending a warning home. ‘Don’t do this.’ But here we are.”

That’s probably the mindset of many war journalists. They want to send a message to the world not to start a war. But as you know, bad things happen.

It cuts to Jessie kneeling on the floor, breathing heavily. Lee is frozen. Joel had his hands up. “There must be a misunderstanding here.”

You see a Militiaman (Jesse Plemons) carrying an AK with red glasses wearing military fatigues. He leaned forward, “What?”

“Were American, okay?” Joel said.

Oh sh*t. I just noticed. Jessie is on his side while Lee and Joel are on the opposite side. Was Jessie held hostage by the Militia?

“Okay,” the Militiaman said, casually scratching his face. “What kind of American are you?” He smirked.

Joel puts his hand down. The Militiaman pointed the AK at Lee. “You don’t know?”

You see the ABSOLUTE FEAR in Jessie’s face.

The Militia man laughed.

It cuts to military choppers and vehicles moving fast.

You hear a female news person, “The Western Forces will reach the capital on July 4th.”

More Top Gun planes flew over the sky.

“Get in the car. GET IN THE CAR!” Sammy shouted.

Jessie and Joel ran towards the white van.

“Move! Move! Move!”

You see military or militia forces moving on top of a building. Is that the White House?

In khaki text over a black background. It says….

ALL

EMPIRES

FALL

You see Joel driving at night. Jessie is in the back seat. They looked all around them as they see houses burned down.

It cuts to military or militia sneaking through the woods, and then….

BOOOOOOM!

A large explosion engulfs everything in fire.

You see an aerial shot of choppers and hundreds of military vehicles. They are getting close to the white house.

You hear the President’s voice, “One nation under God…”

You see Joel hanging from the van.

You see tanks and military in the middle of Washington DC.

“…indivisible…with Liberty, and Justice for ALL.”

You see a chopper raining down explosives in the middle of DC.

It cuts to the military/militia now inside the White House. The White House Spokesperson had her hands up.

BOOOOOM!

A large explosion in the middle of the White House.

“God Bless America!”

The trailer chillingly ends with a group of people SCREAMING.

“AAAAAHHHHHHH!
