Data Engineering Book Review: Building Event-Driven Microservices (2nd Edition)

What’s covered in this book, who should read it, and why I recommend it for data engineers.

Reading the Building Event-Driven Microservices eBook and taking notes in Notion on my iPad.

Event streaming has been an in-demand data engineering skill and will still be in the AI era. As the data landscape is constantly evolving and I’m encountering increasingly complex engineering problems at work, I often feel the need to learn more and become a better engineer. Many of you would probably resonate with this feeling.

I recently came across the Building Event-Driven Microservices book on LinkedIn. The book is written by Adam Bellemare and foreworded by Martin Kleppmann (the author of Designing Data-Intensive Applications). It took me about 2 weeks to complete the book end to end.

In this book review, I will cover a few things:

  • What’s covered (and not covered) in the book, and why it’s relevant for data engineers
  • Who should read the book, and what prerequisite knowledge should you ideally have
  • Where to download the free eBook
  • A bonus section on how to find time to read and learn outside of work

Let’s dive in!
