Discussion – Buyers should start to tune expectations to an increase in quality/content and decrease in micro-transactions if Gen-AI is going to be used in all game development going forward

Currently, AAA game development is very expensive because AAA games need a lot of developers involved over several years to output a product. The high cost has also led to a rise in more and more micro-transaction systems (skin packs, micro-DLCs, battlepasses, subscriptions, etc.) to guarantee a return on the initial investment.

The allure of generative AI is that is can decrease the largest expenditure in game development and decrease the number of employees and the time needed to output a product. The downside is that there are several ethical concerns over gen-AI usage and a concern over the homogenization of artstyle and gameplay due to how gen-AI models are trained using existing materials.

My argument is that if the cost is going down for game publishers/investors and the products will suffer some samey-ness in design, then buyers should be re-considering the payment structures of these products in regards to the contents. I do not believe that the excuse of "they have to raise prices and sell more items in the in-game store because of inflating game development costs" will hold as well when costs are being sharply decreased due to gen-AI.

We are already seeing it in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, but there were no reciprocal cost decreases or increase in content for the buyer. All game publishers and developers are discussing how to include gen-AI in their processes to decrease costs, I would advise buyers to look for those that are using it to the betterment of product valuation to the consumer over the revenue increase to the investor.
