By skyforbes It's been almost a month since I watched Aftersun but thinking about it still brings back the sadness that I felt for the next few hours after I just finished watching it. I haven't read any of the posts here or any reviews so that I can figure out the why myself rather than being influenced by others.
For me, the melancholy lingers because my mind extrapolates the dreaded tragedy not shown but only implied in the film. There are several scenes where I am sucking in my stomach expecting something terrible to happen but it doesn't. Perhaps I forget other instances, but the only time any character directly says something heart-breaking is in the karaoke scene.
As being someone who grew up in the 90s, may be the nostalgia too plays its part.
