Dying in Silence — Why Mental Health Care is a Luxury, Not a Right

You guys want to know what really makes me angry? I have insurance, TennCare BlueCare, which is Medicaid, and yet, finding a mental health provider who actually accepts it is almost impossible. It feels like the system is set up to make sure that people who need help the most are the ones least able to get it.

I understand that therapists and psychologists worked hard for their degrees. They put in years of study, internships, and long nights. And yes, it is frustrating to take on clients who cannot pay $150 a session. I get that. But if you went into this field to help people, why does it feel like so many lives are being ignored? People are literally dying from mental health issues in this country, and our system seems to shrug its shoulders and move on.

I have been struggling myself, reaching out to over 40 different therapists on Psychology Today. Most never responded. Some responded only to tell me they take self-pay clients. If I had the money to pay $150 every week, I would do it because self-care is important. But I barely make enough money to cover rent, groceries, and my family’s basic needs. Self-care should not be a luxury. It should be a lifeline, something everyone can access when life feels like it is collapsing.
