By skyforbes I’ve been playing Expedition 33 for a while now (halfway through act 2), and the title says it all. I’ve done as much side content as I can, obviously along with the story, and that has amounted to about 28 hours so far. I will finish it, because it actually is good. This game is no where NEAR what people make it out to be.
Turn-based combat for me a major negative, side activities are tedious and annoying, graphics are pretty fuzzy on PS5 pro, facial animations are basically broken, it desperately needs a minimap when exploring regions, most “loot” is just another pictos that does nothing for your build or chroma that you have 50,000+ of already, etc.
Why is this game praised so much? Don’t get me wrong I’m having fun with it and I think it’s pretty good overall (story is doing some real heavy lifting), but I struggle to see why people are claiming it’s a top 5 of the past 10 years.

Just wanted to clear some stuff up here. No this game isn’t BAD. I never said that it was. The story, dialogue, characters, voice acting, etc. is genuinely great. Like practically S-tier. It’s everything else surrounding it I’m struggling with. Yes, I do normally struggle with turn based. I figured if I was ever going to get into them, E33 would be the best choice given its changes towards its combat. In the main, I was right. This is BY FAR the most time I’ve put into a turn based game. I put the “turn based combat is a major negative for me” above more as a note of where I’m coming from. Not even necessarily a knock against the game. As I said, this particular turn based combat actually works for me.
The main point of this post is tapping about everything else. For example, BG3 and Persona 5 get praised like crazy as some of the best RPG’s of all time. Turn based, sure, but also exploration is peak, relationship building is incredible, side quests and loot are awesome, and on and on and on.
In other words, I get the praise for BG3 and Persona 5 given that basically every aspect of them are near perfection. From my experience with E33, many aspects are kinda meh?
