Don’t underestimate the power of limitations
What do all these media pulled from different times and aspects of entertainment have in common?
At first glance, little. At a second glance, quite a bit:
- short form content of something larger
- limitations in style/size/power
- they are “pickup and play”
And why would you care about that?
Because attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, but people still want meaningful entertainment (if you find that kind of entertainment on TikTok is up for debate, but you get the drift).
Gameboy games have a very endearing thing going for them: they are easy to pickup and play without stealing your whole day. They have to be. Limitations in hardware design and memory back in the day forced developers to make the best from the little that was there.
I enjoy this way of doing things and try to bring it to my short stories, and you should too.
Where TikTok comes in: People are used to short content, mainly due to TikTok (and Youtube shorts of course) and just a flood of information (mostly garbage and ads, and garbage ads) and our attention spans are really short these days. But it is…
