This is one of the most challenged and banned books in the US right now. When I was living in West Virginia, it was one of those books that were banned. I don’t understand what was wrong with this book. I could see older teens reading it and having a new understanding of people who are different than them.

This graphic novel is a memoir. This graphic novel memoir is an interesting format. I haven’t read the graphic novel from ND Stevenson, but that is in my to be read pile. Anyway, this graphic novel Genderqueer begins with the author sharing their childhood and early adulthood, and how they explore their gender, among other things.

Is the paradigm of female/male the only gender markers we have? I have spoken with others about their gender identities. It’s not for me to share their personal stories, but I do understand to a point how they perceive their genders. I still struggle with it sometimes, but I try not to be a jerk about it. Besides, I am still navigating the possibility that I may be non-binary. I am gender-nonconforming. I would be ignorantly labeled as a butch lesbian. For a while, butch lesbian was an identity I held. I still hold it because it is easier, but I personally don’t like being put in a box. I’ve always been a walking gray…
