The lauded NYC indie rock quartet push their oddest tendencies to the max with their third LP
Of the countless indie rock bands New York City has produced, not one sounds like Geese.
Whether blazing through frenetic post-punk riffage or taking their time with blues-rock ballads, Geese are instantly recognizable, thanks to their inimitable frontman Cameron Winter. His voice has a truly unique tone, capable of classic rock wails, baritone crooning, and Thom Yorkian falsetto, sung with complete abandon.
I heard that when I reviewed their 2021 debut Projector and their name-making sophomore LP 3D Country, and I heard it again this past July when they released “Taxes,” the energetic lead single off their brand new LP Getting Killed.
But on “Taxes,” I also noticed a shift in Geese as songwriters. Instead of a traditional verse-chorus-bridge structure, “Taxes” is just two verses, played as though they were improvising. That musical freedom carries through Getting Killed; Geese emphasize the feelings they want to impart over the technical precision of their performances, and it yields remarkable results.
