HOAX: This TikTok account soliciting funds for accident victims does not belong to NTSA

NTSA has distanced itself from the account.

This TikTok account claiming to belong to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and soliciting funds to support accident victims in Kenya is a HOAX.

The TikTok account goes by the username “NTSA KENYA” and the handle “@ntsaknya”. It uses NTSA’s logo as its profile picture. As of 15 May 2025, the TikTok account had 8,625 followers, 8,033 likes, and was following three people.

Though the TikTok account mostly shares posts about the different NTSA’s services and educational posts on road safety, PesaCheck found a post soliciting money from the public.

https://www.mchanga.africa/fundraiser/44295 Help our fellow Kenyans suffering after road accidents by giving something Mpesa Buy Goods Till 5374427,” reads the post.

An image showing a road accident scene is attached to the TikTok post.

Upon visiting the M-Changa link provided in the TikTok post, PesaCheck found that the fund drive is titled “Contribution for sick and suffering.” This is a red flag, as the TikTok post claims the funds are for road accident victims. Only KSh140 has been raised out of the targeted KSh5,000,000. It is not clear who is behind the fund drive.

Additionally, the M-PESA Till Number shared on the TikTok post is registered under “William Asiema” on M-PESA. This is another red flag, as it should read “NTSA” if it were a real initiative by the agency.

Another red flag is that the TikTok account misspells the word Kenya in its TikTok handle.

A review of NTSA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shows that the agency has flagged the TikTok account as a scam account.

“NTSA cautions members of the public of a fake TikTok account. (@NTSAKENYA). The Authority communicates ONLY through its official accounts: (X- @ntsa_kenya /Facebook — NTSA KENYA, Youtube channel — NTSA_Kenya, Website — http://ntsa.go.ke),” NTSA wrote.

NTSA further cautioned the public that all payments to secure any NTSA services are made through the eCitizen platform.

“Members of the public who have been conned through @NTSAKNYA and phone number +254204401894 should immediately report to the nearest police station for further action,” the NTSA statement adds.

NTSA is a state corporation responsible for transport safety regulation and enforcement in Kenya.

PesaCheck has looked into a TikTok account claiming to belong to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and soliciting funds to support accident victims in Kenya and found it to be a HOAX.

PesaCheck is East Africa’s first public finance fact-checking initiative. It was co-founded by Catherine Gicheru and Justin Arenstein, and is being incubated by the continent’s largest civic technology and data journalism accelerator: Code for Africa. It seeks to help the public separate fact from fiction in public pronouncements about the numbers that shape our world, with a special emphasis on pronouncements about public finances that shape the government’s delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) public services, such as healthcare, rural development and access to water/sanitation. PesaCheck also tests the accuracy of media reportage. To find out more about the project, visit pesacheck.org.
