How can E33 be GOTY, if it isn’t RPG of the year?

I don’t really care about GOTY, I enjoy the show and stuff, but don’t need my top games of the year to win for validation. Also through out the post I use scores out of 10 for various game elements, these aren’t a reflection of my thoughts or opinions on those games or their elements, they are random numbers plucked out of the sky for the sake of argument and example.

However, all over social media I am seeing multiple comments to the effect of, “E33 deserved GOTY but, KCD2 deserved RPG of the year.” This is a logical fallacy, no? How can a game possibly be GOTY, if it isn’t even the best game in its respective genre?

You could take every award E33 won away from the game, besides RPG of the year, and it would still make sense to win GOTY. Like you could say Silk Song had 10/10 art direction while E33 had 8/10, so Silk Song wins art direction. You could say Hades had a 10/10 OST and E33 was only a 9/10, so Hades wins OST. However, whilst those games beat E33 in one category, the rest of the game might be all 4/10 or 5/10 so that game can’t win GOTY. Whereas, E33 could narrowly lose all those categories and win GOTY because all its components are 7-8/10. That makes total sense.

But, you can’t say another RPG is better than E33 and still give E33 the GOTY. At that point you’re saying this game in the same genre is better than E33, so how can you possibly give E33 GOTY? I fully get and agree that KCD2 had more RPG elements to it, the ability to role play for one, character builds, stats etc. but again if your ranking them as games from the same genre, KCD2 might have 10/10 mechanics, but 6/10 VA, 3/10 OST, 7/10 story. Whilst E33 loses purely in RPG mechanics, it beats it in every other area, therefore it must be RPG of the year, no?
