With the release of Zootopia 2 this week, 9 years since the first film came out, part of me couldn't help but feel a little disappointed when I found out that it takes place just 1 week after the first film rather than a huge time jump. First with Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and now Zootopia 2, it seems like animated sequels are opting to tell stories that take place within a shorter in-universe time span of the first despite the originals being released decade(s) ago. On one hand, this makes sense because the advantage of animation is that the characters remain timeless, so the stories the filmmakers want to tell aren't restricted to our real life passage of time. But on the other hand, it would be nice to see the characters age and mature alongside us. However, I acknowledge this can be a double edged sword as it's too easy to make our beloved characters receive the Indiana Jones/Luke Skywalker treatment where they turn into old grumpy versions of themselves. I feel like many will just see this as a nit-pick not worth squabbling over, but it was just a thought I had.
