How does ChatGPT know information about me, and why does it lie about it?

I asked chat a question about jobs missing from Indeed, and in the course of our back and forth, it very accurately gave my location as an “example” of what I could set my location to for my job search.

I asked it how it knew my location, and it assured me it was just a guess. Repeatedly, it said it has no way of knowing my location.

So I decided to replicate it on another device, and again it used nearly my exact location as an “example.”

Mind you, the location it shares isn’t a big city. I’ve met people in my state who haven’t even heard of it. So it’s not like chat is using a random large population center like NYC or LA.

How does it know where I am? And why isn’t it forthcoming with how it knows?
