How I Helped a Wig Vendor Go Viral on TikTok (and Attract Real Customers) with Just One Ad

You can copy and paste this strategy for your own business.

Client — Queen

Queen is one of my favorite clients ever, not just because she’s so sweet and easy to work with, but because she’s brought me more referrals than anyone else since we started working together.

When she reached out, she already knew what she wanted.

She’d gotten my number through a friend’s referral and sent me a straight message “Hi, Sofie, I want to run ads on TikTok.”

Now at that time, she didn’t have up to 1,000 followers, her posts were performing averagely well, and she wasn’t making any sales.

She wanted more and I gave her a way to have that.

The Problem:

When she reached out to me saying she wanted to run ads, I took her through my 3 steps pre-ad process:

  1. Optimize profile
  2. Ad content check
  3. Uploading the ad

Her profile was cool, although I made a few adjustments to the name and location (basically SEO stuff that would allow her target audience to find her online)

The major issue we encountered was with the ad content she submitted.

Now, the video wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. The point is it wasn’t attention-grabbing enough especially for TikTok.

It started with the classic “Hey guys…” and then different transitions of a bunch of wigs.

Now, if you’ve spent any time on TikTok, you already know that viewers scroll past within seconds.

On a fast app like that, you don’t have time to warm up. You either grab attention in the first two seconds or you lose it.

So your video may not be bad but if it is forgettable, your ad will have a problem converting.

The Fix:

I was honest with her and I explained to her how that video wasn’t going to cut it.

I can remember saying this “The content you use for your ad is just as important as the ad itself.”

She’s pretty open-minded so she agreed to make a few tweaks based on the advice I gave her. Some of them included:

1.. Show her face: People connect with people, not products, so seeing the person behind the wigs builds trust and credibility and also makes it easier for people to pay.

So, she added life clips of herself combing out the wigs, styling them & trying them on.

2. Use a catchy background audio: Sometimes people won’t stay for the visuals, but they’ll stay for the sound.

I advised her to use a trending sound from a popular Nigerian pastor — “Indaboski” and it was perfect. I know it sounds weird. But that’s the point. Weird things get people’s attention!

The audio itself was enough to stall people so they could watch the ad.

3. Use a nice hook: Don’t start ad videos with “hi everyone” please I beg you.

The particular video she uses didn’t require her to talk so I advised her to add a nice caption at the top of the video to give context.

The exact hook I gave her was,

POV: You just found your personal wig vendor! You should Like & follow to stay in touch”

3. Keep it short: TikTok is a fast app and no one’s really interested in watching a two-minute wig video.

So to get the best out of an ad, the goal is to make it snappy & relatable.

I told her, “You’re a new brand. Nobody knows you yet and that just means they don’t care. So, you have to give them another reason to stay.”

The Results:

After we implemented these tweaks, I went ahead to set up the ad.

I targeted a specific age range where I know her target audience falls under. Then I paid and the ad was live.

Within 3 days, the traction started coming in.

She started gaining followers, getting engagement, and — most importantly attracting real customers.

In her own words:

I’ve gotten several customers from TikTok since I ran that ad and I’ve had viral posts and increased engagement.”

The Secret:

Queen’s results didn’t just come from the ad.
In fact, that was just the beginning of her journey.

Yes, the ad pulled her out of her shell, gave her a visibility boost, and made people notice her.

But I advised her to stay consistent with valuable content creation so she can nurture her new followers into paying customers.

Fortunately, she listened and stayed diligent with content creation, which is what allowed her to maintain the attention we got through the ad.

The Takeaways:

1️⃣ Your ad is only as strong as your content.

If your video doesn’t grab attention instantly, no amount of ad spend will save it.

2️⃣ People buy from people they feel connected to

Show your face. Be human. Let them see you, not just your product. This will build trust and make it easier to buy from you.

3️⃣ The ad gets you visibility — your content keeps it.

Running an ad is the starting point, not the finish line. You must be intentional about nurturing the new leads or followers you get from ads

Wrapping up:

You don’t need a huge following to grow on TikTok or get sales and Queen’s story is proof of that.

What you really need is a strategy that will make people stop scrolling and give you their attention.

Once you have that attention, you can make good money off it.
