How to Make Real Homemade Marshmallows with Marshmallow Root

Last Updated on July 13, 2025 by Gabby Hatten

Indulging in a sweet treat doesn’t have to come with guilt, especially when it comes to homemade marshmallows infused with the incredible benefits of marshmallow root. Known for its soothing properties, marshmallow root has been used for centuries to support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and promote overall wellness. By crafting your own marshmallows at home, you can enjoy a delightful, fluffy dessert that satisfies your sweet tooth with added health benefits. Unlike the overly processed store-bought versions that often contain artificial flavors and excessive sugars, these homemade marshmallows are simple to make and can be tailored to your taste, making them a wholesome alternative that you can feel good about enjoying.

What You Need

The most essential ingredient for this recipe is the real marshmallow root. Plenty of recipes online call for egg whites or corn syrup instead of marshmallow root, but that defeats our purpose here. We want those added herbal benefits!

The second most important item for this recipe is a stand mixer or a hand mixer- either one will work, but you need that over simply using a whisk.

When it comes to the gelatin- you have several options. I prefer a high-quality grass-fed beef gelatin for its added benefits, but you can also use agar agar powder as a vegan substitute.

For the rest, chances are these are items you always have on hand—honey or maple syrup, water, and a pot and a pan. The tapioca flour’s only purpose is to make the marshmallows easy to cut and handle; if you don’t have that, you can use cornstarch or arrowroot powder.

Cinnamon is optional, but I prefer the honey and cinnamon flavor combination. You can also add the cinnamon (or any flavor you want) to the mixture instead of just coating it on top. This recipe is very versatile and serves as a great base recipe!

Medicinal Properties of Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root, from the Althaea officinalis plant, is a wonderful herb with some impressive health benefits. One of the best things about it is how it can help with respiratory issues. The natural mucilage in marshmallow root creates a soothing layer on the throat and lungs, making it great for easing coughs and sore throats. If you’re feeling under the weather or dealing with a pesky cough, this herb can really help you breathe easier.

But that’s not all! Marshmallow root is also fantastic for your gut health. Its mucilage content helps to coat the digestive tract, providing relief from discomfort and reducing inflammation. This makes it an excellent option for anyone with digestive issues like gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome. Plus, you can easily use marshmallow root to create your own herbal remedies. Adding marshmallow root to your homemade marshmallows means you’re not just treating yourself to a delicious snack but also giving your body some extra love and care!

Storing Your Marshmallow Root Marshmallows

  • Place the marshmallows in an airtight container. You can use a glass jar or resealable beeswax bag.
  • Keep the container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A pantry or cupboard is ideal.
  • While it’s not necessary to refrigerate your marshmallows, doing so can extend their shelf life. If you choose to refrigerate them, be aware that they may become slightly firmer and lose some of their fluffy texture.
  • Enjoy your homemade marshmallows within 2 to 3 weeks for the best flavor and texture. If they start to harden, you can try warming them slightly in the microwave for a few seconds to restore some softness.

How to Enjoy This Easy Marshmallow Recipe

These fluffy marshmallows can be enjoyed in endless ways. While my kids prefer to eat them outright, my husband enjoys this herbal goodness atop a freshly brewed cup of coffee. They melt like a dream and are delicious on hot chocolate as well. Looking for an easy recipe that packs a major nutritional punch? Make bone broth hot chocolate and add these gut healthy medicinal marshmallows on top. The use of marshmallow root gives these a unique flavor unlike store-bought marshmallows.
