I tried watching Mamma Mia a few days back and I do not really get what exactly is great about it. Granted it has a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes and Ebert was pretty ambivalent towards it so its not like it was universally beloved. But I feel people seem to act like its one of the greatest movies ever and I do not believe that to be the case. I feel the overall story is pretty weak and is just a flimsy attempt to string together ABBA songs without much reason or rhyme for the most part. Most of the singing is pretty poor(Pierce Brosnan!). Some of the scenes feel just ridiculous and most of the supposedly fun scenes tend to just feel campy. Like taking ABBA out of the context I feel like its just a weak movie with weak characters and a weak plot. I can understand people like saying its a guilty pleasure but I don’t understand when people say its a great film.
