I Took My Film to the Streets of NYC: Crowdfunding IRL

I wanted to share a bit of my experience crowdfunding my indie feature, Squad Goals, the scariest way possible – out on the streets (or more specifically, the parks, of New York.

Instead of relying just on online campaigns, I’ve been setting up “street stunts” – holding signs and inviting people to donate with the lure of an attractive proposition (in this case, bubble balls). It’s odd and feels incredibly vulnerable, but it’s also been surprisingly rewarding. So far, I’ve collected hundreds of emails from people who want to see my movie when it’s finished and met folks who’ve connected me with journalists and potential investors.

What I’m learning is that filmmaking is about connection as much as creativity. When people see your passion in person, they want to help.

If anyone’s curious, I’m documenting the whole process (the wins and the awkward bits) on my Youtube channel, SitinprettyProductions
