In 2015, legendary Syrian archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad gave his life to defend the ancient city of Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from destruction by ISIS militants. Even under weeks of torture, he refused to reveal the location of priceless artifacts he’d hidden away. He was 83 years old.
