I’ve combed through just about everything Cher ever did, so it’s time I give Sonny some love, too.
By this point in time, most Rock n’ Heavy readers probably know me as “The Cher Guy,” given the sheer abundance of articles I’ve written about her work, and I honestly don’t blame them. I was sure by this time, I’d finally gotten the last dedicated Goddess of Pop piece out of my system, but then an idea struck me soon after. I’m no stranger to covering the solo work of my favorite artists’ associates, so when I randomly discovered that Mr. Salvatore Phillip Bono himself had released a little-known solo album while still married to Cher, I immediately knew I had to talk about it.
Now, Sonny was no stranger to flying solo. After the dissolution of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour’s original run in mid-1974, he took most of the crew with him to start his own variety show, which was expected to do better than Cher’s solo show. But it turns out that Lucille Ball was right when she told Cher she was the real talent of the act, for Sonny’s show was canceled after thirteen episodes, whereas Cher’s series got two seasons. Even after the two parted ways for real, Sonny made a name for himself in the restaurant business as well as Republican politics.
