Is Al Pacino the most controversial great actor?

At least based on Reddit, it seems half love him and half think he‘s overrated parody of himself who forgot how to act after a certain point.

If I searched Nicholson, or De Niro, as examples – sure, there will be some comments about how they play themselves, or they phoned it in, etc…as they got older

But, it seems really extreme with Al. I tend to chalk it up to most/many preferring a very quiet type of which is fine – acting is subjective- but I think a lot of the criticism is unfounded. IMO, he chose not to play the intensely internalized types like Michael Corleone because that took a huge toll on him physically & mentally. I also think he just loves bringing energy to his roles, roles that he can be dynamic in – I think that’s who he’s always been. He’s just so talented that he can do anything. Like Sidney Lumet said, he knows people.

There just seems to be a complete split about him – which is unusual to me for an actor considered to be a legend.

EDIT: I’m referring to GOAT level actors, like top 5 consideration, not generally great or very good
