My father is a ward of the state. I just found him after 20 years. He is in his 70s with dementia, bipolar/schizophrenia (unknown which), COPD, heart disease without failure, diabetes, and is unintelligible a majority of the time.
My father has under 1k per mo through social security. No other form of money or assets. He is on Medicare and Medicaid. Michigan.
He has been in a long term skilled nursing home with a Medicaid bed for 3 years at his current facility. Medicaid pays for it, and he pays almost all the 1k of SS towards it too ("patient pay").
Each year the assigned guardian (lawyer) and facility recertify for Medicaid. They agreed to let me move him closer. I'm excited to get him closer and in a better facility. But scared I am missing something obvious.
Tons of questions, so PLEASE anything you can answer from below, I appreciate it:
1) Will this Medicaid provider long term care ever expire on him? Will the SS portion run out, or lessen, leaving him financially burdened for the difference?
2) Can dementia ever become so bad that the facility can't handle his care? The new place said they have lots of people in their care with dementia. They are affiliated with a hospital.
3) Could he ever become homeless?
