Last Christmas the movie starring Henry Golding (Tom)and Emilia Clarke (Kate) as the front runners of a Christmas romance is anything but. I look at the reviews and it seems like most people were hoping for sweet Christmas romance but were sorely disappointed.

Really the movie was about self compassion and finding yourself not through a relationship but healing codependency patterns. I thought this was a well scripted movie that show cased a Kate, a hopeless romantic who was also very codependent coming from a dysfunctional family wearing the mask of the scapegoat or the troubled child. Her family being refugees struggle with their own internal set of emotional problems.

Her mom is overly critical and self isolates. Her dad appears to be emotionally unavailable. Her sister Marta is the hero of the family constantly trying to be the perfectionist of the family. Kate, is the scapegoat that highlights her cry for help. Constantly in a cycle of self pity and continuously cycling through emotionally unavailable men , being irresponsible with taking care of herself and drinking to escape or numb her problems.

Funny enough Tom is a psychologist who works at a homeless shelter who could be the answer to her problems and “fix her.”The two in a way fall in love, but Tom knows that what Kate really needs is to work on loving herself. She is looking to him to…
