This year, it was stacked.
But, in my opinion, 2024 while had “fewer” games at the top end (lets say 87+ metacritic as a proxy for what constitutes “top end”), i think 2024’s best games (Astrobot/Metaphor) likely would get GOTY this year if they came out this year anyways.
I dont care for metacritic, but just using it as a proxy, both those games have a higher metacritic than any game that came out this year (95 and 94 on Ps5 for the ones I listed).
The front runner for GOTY this year is obviously E33, but I and many others who are big into JRPGs felt that Metaphor (and even Rebirth) were more enjoyable than E33.
The point of this thread is just give 2024 its flowers… because as “bad” a year as it was, 2024’s best games could stand up to any game released in any other year, IMO.
