Let’s talk about AI hate and why “AI slop” is not the main justification for its hatred

I can admit, AI can be a useful and helpful tool under the right circumstances. Most people don’t doubt that. What I doubt is when people say “AI slop” is the main reason for AI hatred. To me, that is completely false. Are some of those Facebook AI videos that your grandmother might believe are real pretty stupid? Sure. Will human art always be more cherished than AI? In my opinion, yes.

I’d rather watch a show or movie created by real humans than AI any day of the week. I’d rather possess an art piece that was painted by a real person than an AI one that was made in just seconds. After all of the reasons I’ve just listed, the main justification for AI hatred is that it wastes a tremendous amount of energy. It’s something that we absolutely need to address.

Asking ChatGPT to write one email is the equivalent of pouring out an entire water bottle or powering 14 lightbulbs for one hour. [1] AI runs on servers kept in hot data centers that need water to cool the equipment. [2] It also requires a lot of energy to run these servers. [3] One ChatGPT request requires nearly ten times as much energy as a Google search. [4]

By 2027, AI could use the amount of electricity that Argentina uses in a year. [5] Fossil fuels are the main source of energy used to power AI. [6] Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 48% in the last five years due to AI energy demands. [7]
