Story
Mass Effect 2 opens with Commander Shepard dying. Yep, killing the hero from the last game right out of the gate. However, the human-first organization, Cerberus, spends two years and billions of credits reviving the fallen hero.
A race of insectile aliens called the collectors have kidnapped tens of thousands of human colonists, and it’s believed they are working for the Reapers, the sentient machines who want to destroy all advanced life in the galaxy. Shepard must put together a crew (consisting of old faces and new) of the top mercenaries, warriors, and specialists to lead a suicide mission to the Collector homeworld and end the threat once and for all. I mean, it’s not like they can kill you twice, right?
Gameplay
The gunplay has been vastly improved from the first game. The combat is much smoother and features a reload system rather than having to wait for your weapons to cool down. The missions are also streamlined, featuring shorter, more focused objectives rather than the larger, explorable environments. This works well as many missions are dedicated to recruiting and earning the loyalty of your allies, and this structure offers more variety and is better tailored to those specific needs.
Outside of combat, you can explore the galaxy and scan plants for resources to build upgrades. You also spend time interacting with and building relationships with your team. This time around there are 12 possible teammates…
