Medicaid dropped me after failed renewal and reapplication

Virginian here. I’ve had Medicaid for about 2 years now. I typically get a letter in the mail about 2 months before my official renewal date reminding me it’s time to renew. Because of this letter, I typically am able to renew on time without facing any lapses in my benefits.

This year, I did not receive that letter and unfortunately lost coverage because of it. I don’t know why I didn’t get anything in the mail. I first thought it was because I changed addresses, but I checked with my parents and I received nothing, not at their house or my new address. I have not been able to contact the office of social services (which is in charge of sending those letters) to understand why I didn’t receive it.

After my benefits expired, I went ahead and re-submitted the application but it was denied a couple minutes later. The reason: because I failed to complete renewal on time.

I guess I’m just at a loss here and not sure what to do. Why is it possible for Medicaid to deny me just because I didn’t renew on time? When it wasn’t even my fault that I was not notified to begin with? Is there something bigger going on here that pertains to Medicaid cuts? Has this happened to anyone else?

Medicaid right now is my only option as I really cannot afford private insurance.
