39 States Expand Medicaid Due To Patient Advocacy, Politics, Democratic Governor And Republicans
Phil Berger, a Republican leader in North Carolina, changed his mind on Medicaid expansion after ten years of opposition. This allowed Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, to sign the expansion into law and provide coverage for more than 600,000 people who are too poor to qualify for private insurance but ineligible for traditional Medicaid. The federal government will cover most of the costs while hospitals will pay 10 percent of it. Seven other states have also approved ballot measures to expand Medicaid due to pressure from local officials and advocates such as Penelope Wingard who shared her story about struggling with medical debt and charity care despite working full-time before she became sick with cancer in 2013.
