I have been unemployed for a couple of years, am 60 and on Medicaid. I am trying out for a 6-month contract job starting in September through Feb—$45 per hour, 40 hours per week.
I called Medicaid to find out how to handle this if I get the job. They were unable to give me any information other than to call them within 30 days and they would help set me up with a plan. They said I should call again at the end of the 6 months but were unable to tell me what I could or would not be eligible for. They promised me that the “big, beautiful bill” would not take away, verbatim.
I didn’t like these answers because they were not thorough. I called New York Stats of Health, their answers were less helpful.
A friend suggested calling an insurance broker she knew who helped people navigate the exchange. They told me that my Medicaid would last through to the month it was issued during last calendar year, and they calculated the salary and said that in March when the job was over I would qualify for Medicaid again because at that point in 2026 I would only have made under 17k.
Who I am supposed to believe?
