No one’s healthcare should be up for a popular vote.
Early voting has already started here in West Virginia. And every ballot in the state contains two constitutional amendments. Amendment One would add the following language to the West Virginia Constitution:
Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion.
This language is extreme and would change the West Virginia Constitution in two ways. (1) It would make it so the West Virginia Constitution never protects a woman’s right to have an abortion. (2) It would make it so the West Virginia Constitution no longer offers protection for poor women who need to have abortions.
The proponents of Amendment One have saying that Amendment One is only about Medicaid funding for abortions. This is a lie. (Check out this other blog I wrote for more info.) But it’s also important to talk about the fact that Medicaid funding for abortion is important.
