After $10K in legal fees and Mom’s death, Medicaid wants to use the five-year look-back rule to make my sister sell the only home she’s known for over 50 years.
When people say, “Be good to your kids because they choose your nursing home,” they aren’t kidding. My siblings and I are guilty of thinking Mom and Dad would enjoy their golden years at the home Dad built. Assisted living facilities were never considered. After all, Dad and Mom were invincible! They were supposed to live forever. Dammit.
Dad made it clear to his three oldest kids (myself included) that after he and Mom were dead, the house was to go to our youngest sister. We were okay with that. I told Dad if the three of us can’t make it on our own by the time they die, we’re in big trouble. However, they didn’t do estate planning except for a will, and the house wasn’t transferred to my sister until a few years after Dad’s death.
Mom’s Alzheimer’s disease didn’t show its ugly face until a month after Dad was gone. Brother #2 and I lived too far away to be hands-on caregivers. Mom was taken care of by my sister and another brother. Thank heaven for FaceTime. It saved a lot of unnecessary phone calls.
