“Technology is nothing without vision.”― Daron Acemoğlu
The global race for AI is often portrayed as a competition between a few tech superpowers. But the story is much richer — and more open — than that. Middle powers like Türkiye, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia are carving out influence not by outspending Silicon Valley, but by setting standards, building data and governance infrastructure, and leading domain-specific initiatives that shape how AI is developed and deployed.
In my new opinion piece published on AI Policy Bulletin, I explore how strategic timing, institutional leadership, and policy innovation can give middle powers real leverage in the AI landscape. The article argues that in the age of general-purpose models, influence comes not from building the biggest model — but from defining how AI systems align with human and societal goals.
