I’ve been a Twilight fan since the first movie came out in 2008.
I actually waited in line at the movie theater, in all my Team Jacob apparel to see all of the movies.
I’ve read and reread the Twilight Saga multiple times, and probably watched the movies way more than necessary.
As a teenager, this world was the perfect escape.
And yes, I still stand by my allegiance to Team Jacob.
But that didn’t stop me from absolutely devouring Midnight Sun when it came out.
The Plot
Essentially, Midnight Sun is the entire first Twilight book from the perspective of the sparkly and dreamy Edward Cullen himself.
We get to experience Bella and Edward’s love story in a whole new way, that is both satisfying and revealing of even more details — - both directly tied to the story and introducing new alternative plots.
(Alternative plots, that we would all love for you to explore Stephanie. If you just so happen to read this.)
Character Analysis
Because this book, is from Edward’s perspective it does alter the way that he is viewed in my eyes.
I always thought Edward was annoying. Again, I’m biased because I am Team Jacob.
But can the Edward lovers just be honest for a second —- Edward is actually kind of insane.
And this book was the proof.
Greasing Bella’s window so she wouldn’t hear him climbing in?
The way he basically just lives in the thoughts of his siblings and peers, invading all of their traumas and insecurities?
And to view the Cullen without the lens of Bella who just thinks they are so perfect, was very eye-opening.
I mean, if I was a vampire I would also probably look down on humans.
But in the context of discussing this book, it is a little scary. Edward actually hears Jasper trying to decide whether he can get away with killing all of the kids at their school — — this is not a joke.
Now despite Edward being absolutely unhinged and honestly, nosy, — this book is unintentionally hilarious for all of the things I just mentioned.
Author’s Writing Style
I have to say, this is Stephenie Meyer’s best writing. And I know it would never happen but getting the entire series from Edward’s perspective would be the most amazing thing ever.
I do love Bella, I enjoy her as the narrator of this story.
But — the characterization of Edward is really the standout of Stephenie Meyer’s writing.
Midnight Sun was probably by favorite addition to the Twilight Saga, and here’s to me silently manifesting that one day we get New Moon from Edward’s perspective.
Or maybe even Jacob’s…..
I mean it would be only right.
