Movies that put you through a wild mental journey

Years ago I watched 'Apocalypse Now'. Always thought of it as a Vietnam epic before seeing it but always heard of how renowned it was. I watched it and figured it'd be just a regular war film. As it went on it just felt more and more surreal. Starting with the water skiing bit, then the tiger, then to the USO part which felt like some other-worldly theater show. It wasn't until the famous bridge scene is where things just turned wild and surreal. I remember thinking what the hell is going on, this isn't war it's a madhouse. After that it just gets dreamy or a sort of nightmare but without monsters or such. By the end I felt like I was watching a completely different film than what I started. Has any other film done that to you?
