Nepal: from TikTok to Kathmandu, the spark of an uprising

I first came across the Nepali crisis two days ago while scrolling on TikTok. The videos were striking: the Parliament in flames, a minister chased by the crowd, protesters clashing with police in the streets of Kathmandu.

But what struck me even more than the images were the comments. Many French users, already mobilized on September 10 against President Macron’s social reforms, expressed their support for the Nepalis, as if this distant revolt were a mirror of their own anger.

In offering this analysis, I do not claim to tell Nepal’s story from within. My intention is to bring a perspective rooted in governance and foresight, to understand how this uprising resonates far beyond the Himalayas. Through social media, a local event becomes the mirror of a global generation in search of justice, dignity, and new forms of sovereignty.

On September/04/2025, the Nepali government announced the blocking of 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X, citing administrative noncompliance. 4 days later, on September 8th, Kathmandu erupted.
