I found out this week that one of my 7th graders has basically had his mom sitting in on my class from her office for who knows how long and I cannot shake how creepy it feels. We are fully in person, but our district kept a generic Meet link active for kids who are home sick so they can listen in. I almost never use it. On Monday I noticed this kid kept glancing at his Chromebook and sort of tilting it toward the front of the room. Later during silent reading he asked if he could send his mom a picture of the anchor chart, which set off a tiny alarm bell. When I said I would upload it to Classroom, he just said she usually watches the lesson on her lunch break anyway. I asked what he meant and he casually told me that his mom logs into the Meet link from her phone so she can "make sure he behaves" and sometimes texts him during my lesson to correct his answers. He did not think this was weird at all. I checked the Meet history and there really is an outside user popping in several times a week. Our handbook talks about no recording staff without consent, but nothing about parents silently listening to a live class. I brought it to my AP who literally said, well at least she cares about his education. I care too, but I also care about my own privacy and the other 27 kids who did not sign up to be background audio for some strangers lunch break. How hard would you push this with admin before going to the union or district office yourself
