A few weeks ago our toilet started stuttering and groaning and shaking on flushing plus a few other small issues.

I gave Gemini a video plus explained it in my own words. It diagnosed it precisely, with a few YouTube videos showing the issue and the fix, recommended a specific part, assured me it was a great DIY project and anyone including plumbing illiterate me could do it and gave step by step instructions.

It also cross referenced ‘evidence’ from my video with my written description and compared it to its diagnosis to give me confidence in the fix. it had clearly “watched” the video.

I verified that it had correctly diagnosed the problem (very common fill valve replacement) and ordered the recommended part, which many plumbers also recommended.

Today my housemate and I replaced the fill valve with no issues and the toilet works perfectly.

I’m not gonna say “we’re cooked”, we’re all tired of that, and I will say I was really impressed.

Absolutely I could have googled my way to a similar outcome but it would have taken much longer and been a wild goose chase since I didn’t have a confident starting place or the correct vocabulary to describe the issue.

It does also make me realize that even last year I probably would have called my dad or a more knowledgeable friend. While I’m really impressed it does make me wonder about the ways we’re reducing reliance on each other and leaning into tech. A different thought for a different day. For now just sharing because I’m
floored by the rapid advancement and increasing practical effectiveness. Not everyone has dads or friends to call, either.
